It was once the old Rosemary Theater but is now home to the largest Buddhist Temple in New York City. Upon entering, take note of the two golden lions that stand guard at the Temple’s entrance. These lions serve to protect the Temple against evil spirits. Once inside be certain to rub the belly of the largest Buddha statue in the city – since it is believed to bring luck, wealth, and prosperity. And before you leave, indulge in having your fortune read for only a dollar! Join Show Hosts Shirley and Brandon as they visit this sacred structure in search of inner peace…and hugs.

“No matter how much makeup you put on, if your skin is not doing good, it’s not good,” said Christine Chin, owner of Christine Chin Spa, which offers facials, microdermabrasion, body waxing and manicure/pedicures. Chin’s services are some of the most sought after in the fashion and beauty industry. Celebs like Kate Moss and Kimora Lee Simons have been known to stop by, in addition to New York City women in search of glowing looks and skin. But Chin’s real claim to fame is her flawless eyebrow wax. Priced at $35, it’s a bit steeper than other spas, but can you really put a price on looks? Chin began her career as a makeup artist over 20 years ago, and recently released her own product line. Masques, toners, moisturizers and more can be purchased at the salon or online.

Many movies are made in New York but not many of them have New York on their credits list. “New York City was not only an integral part of The French Connection,” explains Actor Sonny Grosso, “it was another character.” The movie follows two detectives as they traipse around the island from Ratner’s Restaurant to the Brooklyn Bridge. The crew even created an actual traffic jam on the Brooklyn Bridge in the famous final scene of the movie. Without NYC “this movie would have never been the same.”

They say the third time’s a charm, and nothing could be truer for the Lower East Side steakhouse Sammy’s Roumanian – the third Roumanian-Jewish restaurant to occupy the same address. Fate dealt New York a lucky hand when Stan Zimmerman won this modern-day institution in a poker game from Sammy himself in 1975.In this bi-level space that never fails to make you feel at home, you’ll be entertained by live music and serenaded by your waiters. Try the chopped liver or the signature Roumanian tenderloin, skirt steak from the diaphragm. Surrounded by the history-adorned walls, you’ll witness how kitsch meets karnatzlack – the latter an elongated sausage patty made of beef and veal, with a generous dose of garlic. Owner David Zimmerman likens the food here to that of Grandmother’s cooking, a major ingredient of which is schmaltz – 100% chicken fat. This is such a staple you’ll find a bottle at each table. You might even be fortunate enough to receive an egg cream made by David himself, who virtually grew up here and is now the self-proclaimed “Doctor of Schmaltzology.” If it’s family-style fun you’re looking for, go to the place where you have an experience, not just a meal. As their t-shirts suggest, “Schmaltz it up at Sammy’s”!

In a culture where half-naked women are splashed on the covers of magazines and teenage beach bums bare (almost) all on MTV, the suggestive moves and short reveals of burlesque can seem tame on the surface. But, there’s something about the themed, over-the-top and often fetish acts that are still risqué. “It’s not like, ‘wow, [breasts!],’” says burlesque performer Gal Friday when asked about the reaction she gets from audiences. “It’s, ‘wow, look what she did to reveal her [breasts].’” Like most burlesque performers, Gal Friday single-handedly develops choreography and sews costumes for her acts, which have featured her as a 1940’s vixen and Marie Antoinette. Both men and women have gathered to watch her bounce, shake and twist at Lucky Cheng’s and The Slipper Room. Her voluptuous build is a healthy and welcome change from the waify figures that normally grace the limelight. “[Burlesque] is an amazing community of women. There’s so much support, and everybody loves themselves so much that you can’t help but start to feel that,” she says. The love extends beyond the stage, too. “The women get along. There’s not really that threat of competition because each person is special and talented in their own way. If there’s any tension, it’s very mild.” Grab yourself a drink and discover this alternative form of entertainment in any of the zip codes below.

Have you checked your chi lately? The Chinese art of Feng Shui can help make sure its moving in the right direction. Many believe that the secret of achieving everything from good health to romance to career success can be determined by your chi, which means “flow of energy.” Feng Shui teaches that one can achieve harmony with their environment through informed arrangement of furniture and the inclusion of objects such as water and stones. In order to achieve future happiness and prosperity, believers in Feng Shui suggest having a consultation by a master before renting an apartment or buying a home or business. Traditionally the title of “Master” is only given to those who have studied the art for more than 10 years. Feng Shui Master John Tsang teams with our host Shirley to help situate a home in a manner that maximizes its positivity. Email John Tsang at fengshui68@aol.com for a consultation.

One of NYC’s oldest neighborhoods is getting the VIP treatment. The Lower East Side Business Improvement District is launching monthly celebrations of all the savory treats and historic streets LES has to offer. Cool in Your Code scoured this zip to bring you just a few of our favorite spots. Spend the day shopping for the latest frocks from young designers at TG170 on Ludlow Street. Recover from your retail therapy with a facial at celebrity favorite Christine Chin Spa on Rivington. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse on Chrystie Street for a little Eastern European flair with unbeatable steaks and raucous live entertainment every night of the week. Wrap it all up at The Delancey, a saucy bar and restaurant boasting live music and a rooftop deck that’s open all year round. CiNYC says “Hooray!” for the Lower East Side.

Metro NY’s special Lower East Side edition is teaming up with the BID to shine a spotlight on the unique character of this historic district. Every month this year will have a different LES is MORE event! Check out cool indie artists during the LES Band Crawl celebrating nightlife in March. Art will be the focus in May with gallery mixers and outdoor movies. If fashion’s your passion, then August is your month. For those looking to have it all, October brings you the Best of LES, including shopping specials and a secret rooftop concert. From spas to sports, the excitement can be found all year long in 10002. For more details, log on to www.lowereastsideny.com.
