Take one step into Greenwich Village staple Aphrodisia Herb Shoppe and the exotic sights and smells will instantly transport you to an ancient market place in India, Morocco or China. Serving the 10014 community since 1969, this intimate apothecary offers everything from medicinal herbs, teas, vitamins and spices to essential oils, jewelry and unique accessories. These days the crowds flock for owner Joann Pelletiere’s tea blends – specially mixed and measured to relieve colds, strengthen the immune system or even cleanse your liver. Another fragrant fan favorite is the essential oil blends, and if you get lucky Joann will personally mix you a one-of-a-kind signature scent. Very soon Aphrodisia hopes to add a “tea spot” where herbivores can come and have their tea brewed and enjoy it at the store. CiNYC Host Shirley takes a whiff and talks shop in this aromatic adventure.

A stop in at The Stoned Crow is anything but ordinary. This Washington Place watering hole is popular with the locals and the NYU crowd. Famous for their cheap drinks, billiards and “stoned crows” (the stuffed birds that adorn the walls of the back room), this is a great place to go with a group. “I always come here with my friends,” says Francine Cameron, a bar regular. “We all live uptown but we love this place so much, it’s worth the train ride.” The jukebox plays some great rock and funk classics. The décor is all about the movies. The walls are covered in old movie posters and the women’s bathroom in a shrine to teen celebs.

There’s nothing stinky about shopping for fromage at Murray’s Cheese shop. One of a kind customer service, not to mention the amazing variety, keeps people coming back. “I don’t work for Murray, I work for the customers. I don’t live for Cielo, I live for the customers.” Cheese monger Cielo Peralta knows a thing or two about the dairy delicacy and this dedication keeps patrons enthralled. Cielo started working with cheese over 17 years ago and joined Murray’s in 1995. He loves cheese, and though he’s the first to kid, “I know nothing about cheese, you asked the wrong guy!” he in fact can tell you anything you want to know about over 250 cheeses. Murray’s carries as many cheeses on any given day and Cielo has a knack for guessing what kind of cheese you are going to like. “The biggest thing I do here,” he admits, “is get people to try new varieties.”

One of the last clubs dedicated to dancing, the Meat Packing District’s Cielo packs a crowd every night of the week. The sunken dance floor in the middle leaves space for serious grooving while observers lounge on the outskirts. With a rotating roster of weekly parties and special guest DJs, Cielo offers a full spectrum of sounds so everyone is pleased. The strong door policy means there may be a wait but the swank décor and infectious beats make it worthwhile.

Working out at the Aerospace Performance Center in 10014 will take you more than a few rounds. Formed by fitness heavyweights Michael Olajide and Leila Fazel, the unconventional gym eschews workout machines and instead trains its clientèle to “do what athletes do for fitness.”

“Boxing is one of the most convenient, effective, challenging workouts you can have, bar none,” Olajide says. But it’s not just boxing. They also offer sprinting programs taught by Olympic world champion sprinters, yoga, ballet and “unbelievable impact” jump rope classes. As Olajide puts it, “You name it, we’ve got it here. It’s all about sports performance.”

Olajide is a former champion boxer who was once the number one ranked middleweight contender. He’s also responsible for some of the fancy footwork seen on the big and small screens, having worked as a consultant on films such as Ali, Million Dollar Baby and John Leguizamo’s Undefeated. Partner Leila Fazel is a former ballet dancer and was a luxury spa innovator with the world-renowned Ian Schrager Hotels before teaming up with Michael.

One of their fitness innovations is the “Aeropod”, an original life-sized video imaging space which directs clients to follow a specially shot boxing regimen that focuses on customized goals, “You learn the maneuvers, how to execute and it continues to get faster and more challenging. It’s as much about recall as it is physical execution.”

Comix Comedy Club induces side-splitting laughter with marquee names like Chuck Nice, Danny Bonaduce and Alex Borstein. This slick new venue is a spacious alternative to its cramped downtown competitors. With 14,000 square feet to spare and unobstructed stage views, this club also doubles as a TV studio. Aside from big-name stand-up stars, Comix also hosts variety, improv and sketch shows, and offers classes for aspiring comedians. Check the website for the latest headliners. Like most comedy venues, there is a two-item minimum, but that doesn’t just mean drinks. Comix offers a full dinner menu complete with appetizers and dessert, so dinner and a show is totally doable. Just make sure you don’t get food stuck in your teeth… you’ll surely be a target for heckling.
