Trying to keep up in the city that never sleeps can often feel like taking two steps forward and one step back. If you find yourself doing the latter, there’s no better place to step back into than The Soda Shop – where old-fashioned dining and décor meet modern tastes. Boasting an authentic soda fountain, this shop serves more than the fizzy stuff. There’s no reason to stop at the malts, milkshakes, egg creams, and cherry lime rickeys. You become a kid in a candy store when you find yourself facing a wall of sweet treats like Smarties, Candy Necklaces, Razzles, Fun Dip Lik-m-Aids, Nik-L-Nips, Doscher’s French Chew Taffy, and Wonka Bars. You can also stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner – choosing from classics like the Tuna Melt and the Mac & Cheese, or neighborhood tributes like the Lower East Side Liverwurst or the Stuyvesant High Grilled Cheese. Offering a blend of cosmopolitan comfort, this Tribeca treasure is more than deserving of a visit – and you’re deserving of such a pure delight.

Grab yourself a metal bucket and fill it to your sweet tooth’s content at Economy Candy. Old-fashioned and family run, 2nd generation owner Joseph “Jerry” Cohen says, “My dad has been here since the 1930’s.” Some of the merchandise dates to way back when, too. Wax lips, squirrel nut zippers, and giant Pez dispensers can be found among vintage candy tins and games. Of course, this LES staple also carries savory modern day treats, all of which fill every inch of the store. Just looking at it all will give you a sugar high. Even diabetics will be satisfied, because the sugar-free selection is nothing to sneeze at. Be prepared to spoil your dinner.

JoMart Chocolate has been churning out homemade confections for three generations and is the last of its kind in 11229, which was once densely populated with competing confectioners. Michael Rogak, “son of a son of a candymaker,” keeps the family tradition alive and sweet today by using his father’s original stove and copper kettles to concoct fresh chocolate creations in-store. It’s no wonder that JoMart boasts customers who have returned for 60-plus years. From bonbons to truffles and bars, there is a treat to please every palate. If you’re looking for something truly spectacular, pop in for a hand-painted chocolate bar. Never have we wanted so badly to have our candy bar and eat it, too.
