Do you feel as if your iTunes library is lacking? Is Pandora no longer exciting your aural senses? Are your musical preferences the butt of your hipster friends’ jokes? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, Burn the Bowery and it’s creator Steve are here to help. Steve’s indie music blog offers an extensive selection of independent and DIY artists to continually stimulate anyone’s musical tastes. This blog features up to date music news, concert listings, album reviews, and artist video interviews. Regardless of whether or not you are a wannabe or an already established music junkie, there is always something unknown and unheard of that is worth discovering on this site.

What brought you to New York?

One of those rare native New Yorkers, I guess. I was actually born and raised in the NY area. Have lived in Astoria for the past 7 years or so.

What do you love about living in New York?

Wow! There’s a lot of things, I love the accessibility of NY, just being able to get basically anything you want or need at any given time. Also there’s an endless amount to do or see & being a music fan it’s one of the best cities to see live music. Tons of great NY bands and everybody else usually comes thru the city when on tour.

What do you think makes a New Yorker?

Being resilient.

What surprises you about New York or New Yorkers?

Think we’re actually more patient then anyone gives us credit for. We put up with a lot throughout a day…

When you leave New York, what do you miss the most?

The energy of the city. Have traveled a decent amount and haven’t been anywhere yet that can match NYC’s energy.

Best corny tourist attraction that you secretly love?

The Statue Of Liberty/Ellis Island, there may not be a better place that captures the history of the city. Plus all my grandparents went through there.

Best place to dine late night?

Well I don’t know if you’d consider it “dining,” but one of my favorites after a good night being out on the town is Rosario’s Pizza on Orchard & Stanton. Could be the best slice in the 5 boroughs! Say hi to Sal if you’re there, the man is a NYC legend.

Best live music venue?

It’s a shame a lot of good one’s have closed down over the years, but Bowery Ballroom is still a great place to see live music.

Last cultural thing that you did (movie, museum, theatre, etc…)?

Museum of the Moving Image

Strangest NY experience you have ever had?

It might be getting stuck in the middle of a fight between a pimp and a Kennedy Chicken worker armed with an electric knife.

Best area or neighborhood for people watching?

You really can’t go wrong anywhere in New York people watching, but Alphabet City has always been an old favorite.

Strangest NYC moment?

You mean besides the pimp fight?? Maybe watching a guy fall through a glass table and still managing to keep his cigarette lit.

What started as an innovative way for a public relations company to utilize the internet, has become an all encompassing source for arts and entertainment events in NYC. Termeh Mazhari not only uses New York Buzz to promote and endorse her PR clients, but also posts reviews of new shows, interviews with trendsetters, and info for all sorts of art exhibits. And Mazhari wants to hear from you. If you went to the Francisca Bastos Jewelry Show or caught a performance of Celebrity Autobiography at the Triad, tell her about it. If you want to spread the word about an event of your own, shoot her an email. Log on to see what all the buzz is about!

Tell us about your blog: New York Buzz is a perso-professional blog that reaches out to New Yorkers who want to hear about cool new happenings in their city (and occasionally beyond). I first launched the blog in April, 2008, soon after AMP3 Public Relations (an A&E-focused PR firm in NYC) hired me as their social media publicist.

The initial purpose of the blog was to offer an up-close-and-personal portrait of our clients (most of whom are in the entertainment industry), but it also featured their latest news and events. In September 2008, I decided to open up my blog to non-clients. So now, anyone who has an interesting New York event they want to promote can just shoot me an email and I might feature it on my blog.

What brought you to New York?

I work in the city, but actually live in Great Neck, Long Island, which is only a 22 minute express train ride away from Penn Station. I came to New York from Philadelphia in search of better work opportunities and a more exciting, multicultural environment. Does moving to New York ever really need a reason though?

What do you think makes a New Yorker?

Well, the obvious answer would be ATTITUDE – and, although that’s certainly true, I’d also add that it’s their open-mindedness and willingness to think outside the box.

When you leave New York, what do you miss the most?

The late-night store hours! It truly is the city that never sleeps.

Best tips, tricks or insider info?

I like to browse New York Magazine’s Sales & Bargain section for info on upcoming sample sales at clothing stores. I’m also surprised that more people aren’t aware that most NYC museums have “pay what you wish” days – check out here for details.

And lately, I’ve been loving Restaurant.com. They have hundreds of Manhattan restaurants in their database and you can get discounted coupons for dirt cheap! (another secret: there’s almost always a discount code to make the coupons even cheaper!). I just bought a 25 dollar coupon for only 4 dollars!

Best corny tourist attraction that you secretly love?

The Flatiron building! I walk by it every single day on my way to work and it never ceases to take my breath away! It’s simply stunning.

Last cultural thing that you did (movie, museum, theatre, etc…)

I went to see Celebrity Autobiography at the Triad theater! Abso-friggin-hilarious! Kristen Johnston’s spot-on reading of Zsa Zsa Gabor’s autobiography almost made me wet my pants!

Best area or neighborhood for fashion steals?

SoHo! On Broadway, between Canal and Houston – lots of small boutiques with great, fun finds that won’t break your wallet!

Music recipes from the Big Apple are served up daily at The Deli Magazine. This blog is solely dedicated to local bands and artists living in NYC. Up and comers you haven’t heard of yet, as well as popular break out bands get the star treatment from the only deli to which you can subscribe! Reviews of bands, lists of concert dates, and a 24 hour music channel keep the news fresh, along with info about recording, promoting and performing in the Delicious Audio Blog and Listings section. This site is for fans and performers alike – so turn your computer up and dig into what The Deli is cooking!

We spoke with Yael Greenberg, The Deli Magazine’s Magnificent PR Girl, to hear what sounds good in the Big Apple.

Tell us about your blog: what is the premise, what are your main coverage areas, how did you get started? The Deli started in 2004 as a magazine exclusively focused on emerging and underground music made in NYC. A few months later thedelimagazine.com was born. Since then we expanded to SF, LA, Nashville and for some reason Burlington, VT. We have daily updated blogs in separate web pages that deal with all these cities’ scenes, and printed magazines in NYC and LA.

Here are the links!
NYC – www.thedelimagazine.com
LA – www.thedelimagazine.com/la
Nashville – www.thedelimagazine.com/nashville
SF – www.thedelimagazine.com/sf
Burlington (VT) – www.thedelimagazine.com/burlington

What brought you to New York?
My brother and the will to find opportunities in the entertainment industry as well as living a life of adventures and randomness in NY.

What do you love about living in New York?
That time is not a real issue in a sense of age, season, month. It goes by here so quickly that I barely feel it. I love that everybody is either a model, actor, musician, artist or all of the above.

What do you think makes a New Yorker?
Not being from NY, knowing where to go on your subway in order to get off exactly at the right spot at the platform in your station.

What surprises you about New York or New Yorkers?
I’m surprised that New York is a city to party in but usually the streets are empty kinda early. Also, it’s weird that everybody here communicates through each other blogs instead of meeting.

When you leave New York, what do you miss the most?
I haven’t left NY since I arrived but I guess I’ll miss McCarren Park.

Do you know any tricks or insider info?
Work for a music magazine or know someone that does to get free tickets to concerts. If you need to work on your laptop and not sit in a coffee place then go to the closest Apple store and sit in the lecture area with the free wi-fi for as long as you like.

Best corny tourist attraction that you secretly love?
All flea markets and the Williamsburg Bridge.

Best neighborhood bar?
The Gutter – tons of good beers and bowling!!!

Best late night joint?
Beatrice but only because of the people I go with otherwise it’s another see and be seen place.

Last cultural thing that you did (movie, museum, theatre, etc…)?
Art exhibition in Harlem called HomeBase.

Best fancy schmancy restaurant?
Not going to any but Sweet Aater is a not fancy great restaurant in W’burg.

Best place to meet members of the opposite sex ?
The subway

Best live entertainment venue?
The Box – don’t bring your kids.

Take a bite out of the Deli Magazine at www.thedelimagazine.com.

There’s more to be heard on this website too. Listen up at coolinyourcode.com/category/segments/vocal_code/

Wouldn’t it be cool if you had a friend who always knew what to order at that new French place, which movies are worth the 12 bucks, or what’s happening on any given night of the week? Well, the neighborbee blog wants to be that friend. Founder Anthony Lobosco gathered an intrepid group of “drones” to help you make the most of the five-borough hive we all call home. Contributors can help find a hot new band to check out, tell fans how to get their sports on without going to a game, even recommend the city’s best flea markets. With friends like these, you’ll be busy as a bee.

Tell us about your blog: what is the premise, what are your main coverage areas, how did you get started?

neighborbeeblog is affiliated with neighborbee.com, which is an internet startup whose purpose is to bring every part of your neighborhood online, from your apartment building to your local bakery (neighborbee is currently in an invite-only beta, and will be launched shortly).

neighborbeeblog was started to highlight all the great things going on in new york city, whether it’s a new boutique or a book signing. We have (thus far) 16 columnists who cover comedy, music, events, fashion, dating, manhattan, film, sports, art, brooklyn, books, food, theater, nightlife, kids & family, and real estate.

What do you love about living in New York?
I love the fact that there is always something going on, always something new to do. - Doug, Sports

What do you think makes a New Yorker?
Understanding the weekend service changes for the subway, which seem to be out of control lately!
- Amanda, Events

What surprises you about New York or New Yorkers?
They’re generally a well-mannered bunch. -Afroblanco, Music

When you leave New York, what do you miss the most?
I miss feeling like a member of the masses — you know, being able to walk out at any time of night, even if it’s 4am, and see other people. Even though those people are sometimes creepy, it’s nice to see that they’re there. - Kat, Books

Do you know any tricks or insider info?
Work from home. - Angela, Fashion

Best corny tourist attraction that you secretly love?
Riding the Staten Island Ferry. -Nick, Nightlife/Photography

Best neighborhood bar?
Professor Thom’s (East Village) - Chris, Manhattan

Best late night joint?
I love a late night run to Crif Dogs, even though on most visits I’m not even eating anything. You’re pretty much guaranteed to bump into a fun mix of characters here as other places begin to shut down.
– Lara, Food

Best fancy schmancy restaurant?
Park Avenue Winter/Spring/Summer/Autumn. So amazingly delicious, and the fact that the menu and decor changes with the season gives you a reason to go back four times a year. Plus, if you do, the waitstaff totally remember you. -Adam, Comedy

Best place to meet members of the opposite sex?
Through friends or a social activity/group, particularly kickball. All of my friends who play have dated at least one other person from the league. It may seem incestuous, but you really can’t argue with the results. -Kate, Managing Editor

Best live entertainment venue?
The subway, those breakdancing kids are so cute! Also I love the comedians on the A when you come home on a Sat or Sun after midnight, they’re perfect for hangovers. - Stephanie, Kids & Family

Comedy has a new face at Kids 'N Comedy, a school for young, aspiring stand-up comics.

Put on a happy face at Kids ‘N Comedy, a school for young, aspiring stand-up comics. Held at the Gotham Comedy Club, the organization’s monthly workshops and shows guide 8-16 year olds with writing, editing, and delivering their own quirky routines. The classes are taught by experienced comedians and teacher who provide the students with insight into how to express their unique world views. Talent scouts also take notice. Celebrities like Josh Peck of Nickelodeon’s “Drake and Josh” had their beginnings at Kids ‘N Comedy. “The classes are an evolution,” says President Jo Ann Grossman. “If the kid’s got [something] in them to develop, then they should do it.” Note to teachers: Next time you hear snickers in the back of the classroom, think about sending that clown to comedy school instead of detention!

“Calling all science geeks, nature freaks, and other rogue geniuses!” The 3rd annual Carnivorous Nights taxidermy contest is back and Union Hall’s Secret Science Club is looking for award winning entrants. Three years ago, owners of Floyd Bar, Andrew Templar and Jim Carden, entered a Rump Ape into a taxidermy contest that was held along side a book signing for “Carniverous Nights: On the Trail of the Tasmanian Tiger” by Margaret Mittelbach and Michael Crewdson. The four enjoyed themselves so much they decided to continue the creature contest with an annual event. The years since have seen many a curiosity, including an Australian sloth, hairy fish and last year’s winner, a Merrabit – part mermaid part rabbit. “What is fascinating are the stories the specimen comes with,” muses Templar. “Whether it was a wedding gift, card game prize, or wherever they happen to discover them.” Dig out your most unique stuffed friend this Day of the Dead, November 2nd, and see if you can’t scare up a little attention!

Catch a look at the competition at www.carniverousnights.com

Rincon Criollo Cultural Center has been an oasis of Puerto Rican, Latin and New York culture for over 25 years. This community garden found in the South Bronx serves as a gathering place, performance space, and celebration grounds open to anyone looking to experience or rejoice in the convergence of cultures. Rincon Criollo literally means Creole Corner and is one of the oldest community centers of its kind. One unique feature is the casitas, replicas of wooden houses that would traditionally be found in the countryside of old Puerto Rico. Perhaps the largest part of the Rincon Criollo experience is the music. Featuring Bomba and Plena, the music of Puerto Rico’s working class, the beats are infectious and dance parties are a common occurrence.

Yerbabuena, a mainstay at Rincon Criollo, plays soul infused music that has been called a cross between a jam in the park, a spiritual ceremony, and a family reunion. “The main thing we bring is a way for the audience to connect with themselves through something we’re sharing with them that’s already there,” explains band leader Tato Torres. The interactive Boricua roots music is loved at the Rincon Criollo Center and the feeling is obviously mutual. “In a way, the whole place is a shrine to who we are and where we’re from,” says Torres. Vibrant and alive with energy, Rincon Criollo is “a non-profit institution, garden and community spot where people come to breath culture that is not for sale.”

“I’m not afraid to say things that may piss a person off,” explains actor and comedian Charlie Murphy, “and I’ve been successful for it.” With recurring roles on Chappelle’s Show, three sold out comedy tours, and various parts in movies, Charlie has plenty to boast about. He has taken the comedy world by storm, which is not surprising considering the talent that runs in his family (Eddie Murphy is his brother).
Charlie stepped into the business after working as a bodyguard for his brother. He thought to himself, “Hey, I can do some of this stuff.” So he took a shot and wrote a script. “I’ve written probably a hundred,” he jokes. “I’ve sold three. That was my first way of being an effective storyteller.” And his stories have enchanted and entertained many both on screen, stage, and paper. Next on Charlie’s calendar is a BET feature entitled “Hot Ghetto Mess.”

Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment Complex is a playland for all ages in the middle of Manhattan. Whether you are a serious athlete looking for off-season training or a sometimes sport looking for entertainment, Chelsea Piers is the place to go. Transformed in 1910 from dilapidated water front, the space was eventually constructed into a sporting megaplex in 1994 by the same firm that designed Grand Central Terminal. The concept was to bring sports that are not readily available to New Yorkers. Now every activity imaginable is under one roof for any to enjoy. Among some of their many offerings are 2 ice-skating rinks, outdoor and indoor driving ranges, the only indoor sand volley-ball court, a climbing wall, bowling alley, and a fitness center that could make an Olympian sweat. If you’ve been searching for a place to play your favorite sport or simply want to try something new, Chelsea Piers won’t disappoint.

The New York institution Caroline’s has been doling out laughs in New York City since 1981. This legendary night spot first started as a Cabaret club in Chelsea. Owner Caroline Hirsch was always a comedy fan and after booking now infamous comedians such as Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen and Rosie O’Donnell the club became known for comedy. After a stint in the South Street Seaport, Caroline’s moved to the heart of New York in Times Square. People flock from all corners of the world to roll with laughter at Caroline’s. It is a true New York experience.
