Many movies are made in New York but not many of them have New York on their credits list. “New York City was not only an integral part of The French Connection,” explains Actor Sonny Grosso, “it was another character.” The movie follows two detectives as they traipse around the island from Ratner’s Restaurant to the Brooklyn Bridge. The crew even created an actual traffic jam on the Brooklyn Bridge in the famous final scene of the movie. Without NYC “this movie would have never been the same.”

Robert Deniro and Jane Rosenthal pulled together the Tribeca Film Festival in May of 2002 to provide a venue for filmmakers to give back to the community. The festival happens every spring and has grown to include music and arts as well. It has been such a hit that The Tribeca Cinemas and Gallery has taken up the torch to provide entertainment in-between festivals.

“What we’re doing here at Tribeca Cinemas is really creating a year round cultural hub,” explains Jon Patricof of Tribeca Enterprises. The theater was originally a screening room they saved from destruction. It remains in almost the same state as it was originally in order to preserve the spiritof the venue. They’ve added a gallery upstairs, a drive-in movie theater and a restaurant next door for their various events and cultural creativities. Or, if you’re so inclined, plan your own event and rent out this spectacular space.

It’s nothing but movie madness at the movie buff’s haven, Museum of the Moving Image. The famed Historic Astoria Studio houses over 100,000 artifacts and memorabilia that have been donated by artists and filmmakers themselves to create the largest collection of its kind.

But it’s not all gadgets and gizmos at this Museum, they are also dedicated to educating the public on what goes into the movie making process with demonstrations and guided explorations of the permanent collections. Current exhibits include a look at digital animation through interactive “software toys” and a tribute to Loews in honor of its 100th anniversary. They also promote dialogue about current affairs through film screenings and discussions. Keep your eye on this museum for all the coming attractions!

Rusty Jacobs and Scott Tiler played young James Woods and Robert De Niro in the “new classic” Once Upon a Time in America. The film, directed by Italian film legend Sergio Leone, paints a picture of Jewish gangsters in Prohibition-era Brooklyn. Go On This Spot with them as they return to several film locations, including the Manhattan Bridge, the site of a pivotal scene in the movie.
