A stop in at The Stoned Crow is anything but ordinary. This Washington Place watering hole is popular with the locals and the NYU crowd. Famous for their cheap drinks, billiards and “stoned crows” (the stuffed birds that adorn the walls of the back room), this is a great place to go with a group. “I always come here with my friends,” says Francine Cameron, a bar regular. “We all live uptown but we love this place so much, it’s worth the train ride.” The jukebox plays some great rock and funk classics. The décor is all about the movies. The walls are covered in old movie posters and the women’s bathroom in a shrine to teen celebs.

Often compared to The Smiths, The Isles have been creating original music in New York since 2004. After producing and recording their first album, Perfumed Lands, they were signed to the indie label Melodic in Manchester, England. The record was well received and The Isles were written up in Magnet, NME, The Guardian, and All Music. While The Guardian noted the strong British influence, the publication wrote, “Strangely, The Isles are from New York. Stranger still, this album works.” The group went on to make two music videos which were seen on MTV Europe. But after touring overseas in Europe and hitting the festival circuit at SXSW and CMJ, the band has proven you can indeed go home again. They’re currently back in the New York groove at work on their follow-up album, tentatively titled Under the Cover of Paradise. When not playing shows, you’ll find The Isles kickin’ back in their Long Island City pad, affectionately known as “Action Jackson.” CiNYC Style Decoder Hitha went for a ride through a few Queens zips with these local rockers.

This local band brings punk back to its purest form in an all out rock and roll love fest.

“We get down and dirty and so does the crowd!” says Michele McGonigle, bassist for The Pervs. This local band brings punk back to its purest form in an all-out rock and roll love fest. Known for their crass lyrics, guitar crunch, and risqué dance moves that often involve singer Linzee Butta writhing on the floor, the audience gets a 365-degree experience of what it means to “get pervy.” The Clash, Sex Pistols and Sonic Youth are just some of the band’s influences. “Pervy is subtle while smashing it in your face,” McGonigle says. “It’s being sophisticatedly bawdy.” And of course, sexy. The band has earned catcalls, hoots and hollers from fans at The Knitting Factory, Don Hill’s, and the international music festival Emergenza. To let go of your inhibitions, join these rockers at their next show.

EXTRA: Extended Interview with The Pervs

CiNYC got extra chatty with The Pervs bassist, Michele McGonigle. Get inside her head and learn what it really means to be a Perv!

What does it mean to “get pervy?”
Sex. Innuendos, double and triple entendres while rocking out and bringing what you can to the table, especially energy, fun and sexy sex sex.

What inspires you to write music?
We love to play and make music. Knowing we’re having fun and that anyone who listens may have fun is enough to keep us in the studio and on the stage!

Where do you think your musical talents come from?
Does anyone really know? Hereditary, passion, hard work… we’d say all three!

You say that some of your influences are The Clash and The Cure. How do The Pervs compare to these bands?
They’ve helped with vocal styles and chord progressions to some extent, but mostly they just make us happy and we love them! Their level of success is something we aspire to.

Chuck your “how to play an instrument” book and hit the recording studio strumming with the help of the Staten Island School of Rock. “We guarantee that you’ll be recording your own lesson by the fourth time you come to us, as long as you practice,” says founder Mike Grande, who has honed his teaching method for the last 20 years. “It’s like karaoke for the musician.” Students begin by learning chords while an instructor plays back up. Then, a custom MP3 is created for take-home rehearsal. Budding musicians learn what other instruments should sound like, and how to lay down tracks in SOR’s recording studio. Still need motivation? “I’m in a band” is a great pick-up line…
