From their first performance in 1958 at the 92nd Street Y to their current role as international ambassadors, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is known for its excellence and commitment to African American cultural expression. Now a mainstay in New York City culture, Alvin Ailey has performed for an estimated 21 million people in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents. They also offer a myriad of programs to delight and educate, which proves that dance isn’t reserved for the classically trained anymore. The Alvin Ailey Extension program gives anyone a chance to take classes that utilize fun techniques such as Samba and Capoeira. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater strives to give dance back to the community, both through invigorating classes and innovative performances.

In a culture where half-naked women are splashed on the covers of magazines and teenage beach bums bare (almost) all on MTV, the suggestive moves and short reveals of burlesque can seem tame on the surface.

In a culture where half-naked women are splashed on the covers of magazines and teenage beach bums bare (almost) all on MTV, the suggestive moves and short reveals of burlesque can seem tame on the surface. But, there’s something about the themed, over-the-top and often fetish acts that are still risqué. “It’s not like, ‘wow, [breasts!],’” says burlesque performer Gal Friday when asked about the reaction she gets from audiences. “It’s, ‘wow, look what she did to reveal her [breasts].’” Like most burlesque performers, Gal Friday single-handedly develops choreography and sews costumes for her acts, which have featured her as a 1940’s vixen and Marie Antoinette. Both men and women have gathered to watch her bounce, shake and twist at Lucky Cheng’s and The Slipper Room. Her voluptuous build is a healthy and welcome change from the waify figures that normally grace the limelight. “[Burlesque] is an amazing community of women. There’s so much support, and everybody loves themselves so much that you can’t help but start to feel that,” she says. The love extends beyond the stage, too. “The women get along. There’s not really that threat of competition because each person is special and talented in their own way. If there’s any tension, it’s very mild.” Grab yourself a drink and discover this alternative form of entertainment in any of the zip codes below.

Comix Comedy Club induces side-splitting laughter with marquee names like Chuck Nice, Danny Bonaduce and Alex Borstein. This slick new venue is a spacious alternative to its cramped downtown competitors. With 14,000 square feet to spare and unobstructed stage views, this club also doubles as a TV studio. Aside from big-name stand-up stars, Comix also hosts variety, improv and sketch shows, and offers classes for aspiring comedians. Check the website for the latest headliners. Like most comedy venues, there is a two-item minimum, but that doesn’t just mean drinks. Comix offers a full dinner menu complete with appetizers and dessert, so dinner and a show is totally doable. Just make sure you don’t get food stuck in your teeth… you’ll surely be a target for heckling.
