Trying to keep up in the city that never sleeps can often feel like taking two steps forward and one step back. If you find yourself doing the latter, there’s no better place to step back into than The Soda Shop – where old-fashioned dining and décor meet modern tastes. Boasting an authentic soda fountain, this shop serves more than the fizzy stuff. There’s no reason to stop at the malts, milkshakes, egg creams, and cherry lime rickeys. You become a kid in a candy store when you find yourself facing a wall of sweet treats like Smarties, Candy Necklaces, Razzles, Fun Dip Lik-m-Aids, Nik-L-Nips, Doscher’s French Chew Taffy, and Wonka Bars. You can also stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner – choosing from classics like the Tuna Melt and the Mac & Cheese, or neighborhood tributes like the Lower East Side Liverwurst or the Stuyvesant High Grilled Cheese. Offering a blend of cosmopolitan comfort, this Tribeca treasure is more than deserving of a visit – and you’re deserving of such a pure delight.

Since its inception in 1996, The Flea Theater in 10013 has been raising the standards of Off-Off Broadway productions with their adventurous and ever-growing family of artists. Founded on the doctrine of creating “a joyful hell in small space”, the two modest performance spaces at this theatrical haven see three original productions each year in addition to a constant rotation of actors, dancers and musicians putting on up to four shows a night. OBIE award-winning resident company The Bats audition thousands of hopefuls every year, and along with The Flea were named “Best Off-Off Broadway Theater Company to Act With” by Backstage Magazine in May 2008. You may be seeing the next John Lithgow, Susan Sarandon or Sigourney Weaver in upcoming productions such as “Explicit Vows”, a solo show in which a soon-to-be groom reflects on his past romantic escapades. Also available at The Flea this summer is “Pataphysics”, a series of workshops taught by master playwrights such as Lee Breuer, Jeff Jones, and Karen Finley. Whatever your pleasure The Flea is sure to delight, surprise and inform the toughest of New York audiences.

Everyone loves a good mystery and the Mysterious Bookshop in 10007 specializes in the occult. One of the oldest mystery specialists in America, this shop has offered the best in Mystery, Crime, Suspense, Espionage and Detective fiction for the past 28 years.

Proprietor Otto Penzler has a history in the publishing world with a focus on who-done-it prose. He is the recipient of numerous awards and his touch can be seen throughout the store, especially in the amazing collection of rare books. “There are certain things that you can read a second or third time and still get something out of it,” Penzler tells us when pushed to pick a favorite book. “I could read Sherlock Holmes 500 times and find something new every time.” Don’t be afraid to ask for advice either, the knowledgeable staff as well as Penzler himself are always willing to give a recommendation. Or, if you’re already a buff, join one of their book clubs or attend one of their various events and satisfy all your mysterious inclinations.

For a step back in time take a trip to The Soda Shop where sweet tooths are satisfied and authentic experiences had. The front of the house offers all the classic candy and old-school memorabilia you can handle. The antique soda fountain whips up egg creams and other tasty treats for sipping while you survey the goods. Stop in for full blown breakfast or a savory lunch. Feeling thirsty? Wander into the High Tea Hideaway in the back for a break with a biscuit and tea. The whole place is housed at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, the longest operating hotel where it is rumored Abraham Lincoln lodged. In homage to old New York, The Soda Shop is a sweet blast from the past.

Showcasing the very best of Greek cuisine, Thalassa delivers delicious dishes with the finest of ingredients. The large Tribeca warehouse was originally used for the family’s Greek food import business, but now boasts a chic, inviting atmosphere. When the next generation took over they thought, “We bring in such wonderful food, it’s about time we serve wonderful food,” explains Sophia D. Zilo. Traditional, fresh, seasonal foods fill the menu with a special focus on seafood, like the most popular dish of scallops wrapped in kataifi. For the real deal in Greek cuisine check out Thalassa.
